How to spot and avoid recruitment scams
Last updated: 10 July 2026 · 6 min read
Recruitment is one of the most impersonated industries online. Scammers pose as recruiters or well-known agencies to steal money and personal data from people who are simply looking for work. The good news: almost every scam shares the same handful of tells. Learn them once and you can spot a fake in seconds.
The one rule that catches most scams: a genuine recruiter or employer never asks you to pay to get a job. If money flows from the candidate to the “recruiter,” it is a scam.
Why job seekers are targeted
Applying for jobs means sharing a lot: your name, contact details, work history, sometimes your address and right-to-work documents. Scammers exploit the urgency and hope that come with a job search. They know a convincing offer can lower your guard, so they move fast, apply pressure, and ask for money or data before you have time to check.
